Hypnosis and Cortisol: The Odd Couple
نویسنده
چکیده
This review is focused on the hypothesis that hypnosis can differentially modulate T-cell subsets and that this effect is mediated by changes in hypothalamo-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) mediators, such as cortisol. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is the study of the interaction between psychological processes and the nervous and immune systems, taking an interdisciplinary approach including psychology, neuroscience, immunology, physiology, genetics, pharmacology, molecular biology, psychiatry, behavioral medicine, infectious diseases, endocrinology and rheumatology. The main interests of this discipline are the interactions between the nervous and immune systems studying mental processes leading to pathologies due to auto-immunity or immune deficiency. Here we make an overview about history of PNI focusing on hypnosis as a modulator of immune response and a therapeutic tool to heal stress related diseases. Here we also share our ideas about studying clinical use of cortisol as a reliable monitor for hypnosis therapy on the homeostasis of hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal axis (HPA axis).

A randomized controlled trial of the effects of hypnosis with 3-D virtual reality animation on tiredness, mood, and salivary cortisol.
Case studies suggest hypnosis with a virtual reality (VR) component may be an effective intervention; although few follow-up randomized, controlled trials have been performed comparing such interventions with standard hypnotic treatments. Thirty-five healthy participants were randomized to self-hypnosis with VR imagery, standard self-hypnosis, or relaxation interventions. Changes in sleep, cort...
متن کاملCellular and humoral immunity, mood and exam stress: the influences of self-hypnosis and personality predictors.
The effects of self-hypnosis training on immune function and mood were examined in medical students at exam time. Hypnosis involved relaxation and imagery directed at improved immune function and increased energy, alertness and concentration. Hypotheses were made about activated and withdrawn personality differences. Eight high and eight low hypnotically susceptible participants were given 10 s...
متن کاملHypnosis, differential expression of cytokines by T-cell subsets, and the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis.
This investigation tested the hypothesis that hypnosis can differentially modulate T-cell subsets, and that this effect is mediated by changes in hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) mediators. Seven healthy, highly hypnotizable volunteers participated in three one-day sessions, a baseline and two intervention sessions. Hypnosis intervention entailed a standardized induction, suggestions for ego...
متن کاملThe role of anxiety in cortisol stress response and cortisol recovery in boys with oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder.
Children with antisocial and aggressive behaviors have been found to show abnormal neurobiological responses to stress, specifically impaired cortisol stress reactivity. The role of individual characteristics, such as comorbid anxiety, in the stress response is far less studied. Furthermore, this study extended previous studies in that not only baseline and reactivity to a psychosocial stressor...
متن کاملStress Reducing Regulative Effects of Integrated Mental Training with Self-hypnosis on the Secretion of Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (dhea-s) and Cortisol in Plasma: a Pilot Study
Early observations have shown that preventive educational efforts towards experience of stress entail advantages in terms of improved well-being, health and performance. We examined the influence in healthy subjects of self-hypnosis and mental training taught in group sessions, with individual training in between according to a standard protocol, and integrated in daily life and work for six mo...
